Another Hero Gone

jeudi 30 avril 2015

My father-in-law, Sgt. First Class Robert Shelton Chapman, passed away this morning at the age of 89. He was with the 82nd Airborne and parachuted into France ahead of the D-Day invasion. He also saw action in the Battle of the Bulge and actually met Patton. He was a hard working, crusty, "no quit in him" kind of character to the end but his heart muscle felt differently. Please remember him, my wife and the rest of his family in your prayers.

Old Colt Revolver

I stopped by the LGS for some Unique and LPP's and an old Official Police 38 Spl. was in the case. It was a consignment gun priced at 395. The action was was pretty smooth and the cylinder locked up tight. The blueing is worn in the places one would expect, the muzzle and the front of the cylinder, but it doesn't have any dings at all. I am almost certain the grips are not original but not a big deal, if it's a shooter. Anyway, I bought it, for that price I didn't think I would be hurt that bad and I have been looking for a 4" revolver. Trouble is I know doodly squat about Colt revolvers. Can you guys give me anything on this piece? How about the grips?

Open carriers. Do you get weird when someone asks about it?

Working in retail I see thousands of people a day. Most don't carry a few do. When I see something I don't recognize I ask about it.

Most are happy to tell me about it and their other guns but a few get weirded out and give me weird looks for the rest of their visit.

Is this a bad practice? I figured if you're open carrying than you had no problems being asked questions.

Any experience with Dysphagia here ?

Has anyone used the various thickeners available to help with elderly or Alzheimers patients who choke on thin liquids ?

This is a new thing for me to help my Dad and the options are many. The gels sound the best to me but are pricey. We are going for the nectar consistency.

Thanks for any info gang.

Early Generation One

Got a Generation one Glock 17 that I bought in the mid 80's. Serial # ax 715, comes in tub with 2 mags, loader, cleaning rod and owners manual. Shows wear because I loved to shoot it. Also comes with a Glock holster of the same time period. My question is what is it worth? I paid $169.00 for it 35 years ago but what is it worth to a Glock collector today.
Thanks in advance!

Texting while driving

I am becoming more convinced that in addition to what should be a fairly obvious danger issue that the distraction also increases traffic congestion. I was driving (traveling?) on US 1 today for a bit. Too often it seemed people stopped further behind the car in front of them than was necessary which I have to think reduces the number of cars that can fill a block while the light is red. Then when the light turns green, inevitably one of the lanes had a car that elected to not to go when the car in front did, which of course slows down the cars behind that one which in turn reduces the number of cars that can get through while the light is green.

Many/most/all of you may well have already figured this out but I often concentrate on a few specific cars or a car rather than all of them in concert. I wonder if there is a way to measure if what I think I saw actually does cause more congestion. I imagine at this point it would be academic as I doubt many would stop looking at their phones.

Firearms Training Classes end of 2015- Southern Exposure, Florida

New classes for the second half of 2015, it will be another outstanding
line up for Southern Exposure Training as our classes have grown each and
every year.

Please book your classes early as most are sold out by class time. I
am amazed that 96% of our classes are sold out by start time and I give
credit to that to the caliber of instructors we bring in.

All classes are taught by Mr. Randy Cain (www.guntactics.com) unless
otherwise noted.

Please make sure you can secure ammo as it may be
hard to find at the last minute.

May 1 - 3 Tactical Handgun 101
May 5 & 6 Private Class

Oct 10 - 12 Close Quarters Tactics
Oct 23 - 25 Carbine 1
Oct 30 - Nov 1 Private Class

Nov 7 & 8 Ladies Handgun
Nov 13 - 15 Practical Rifle
Nov 20 - 22 Intermediate Handgun
Nov 30 - Dec 1 Tactical Handgun 101

Dec. 11 - 13 Shotgun 1
Dec. 14 & 15 Tactical Revolver

May 1 - 3 Tactical Handgun 101 By far the
most asked for class we offer and for good reason, the handgun is the
most difficult weapon to shoot accurately. You will be taught why your
hits don't go where you want them to go and how to correct this problem.
All students will become a better shooter under the diagnostic ability
of Mr. Cain I urge all serious students to repeat this class at least twice a
year. Three days for $550.00

May 5 7 6 Private Class CLOSED

Oct 10 - 12 Close Quarter Tactics (C Q T) Once you have the basics of shooting on a square range then you need to branch out, since most gunfights happen at "bad breath distance" this class focuses on what happens at that distance. You will learn retention and counter retention techniques that may be more important to saving your life in the street or in your home. This is a live fire class but will have exercises in foot technique (the same footwork that your learn in Tarani's classes will apply because it is part of a system) and working with a blue gun. Three days for $550.00

Oct. 23 - 25 Tactical Carbine Many experienced shooters consider this the best carbine class available as it really focuses on the
fundamentals and if you aren't schooled in the fundamentals you will
never succeed with the carbine. Mr. Cain requires a high level of
accuracy and competence with the weapon. I recommend this class for all
wishing to take the more "advanced carbine" classes we offer and will go
so far as to say that those who do best in the advanced carbine classes
I have witnessed have attended this class at least once. Three days for
$550.00

Oct 30 - Nov 1 Private Class CLOSED

Nov 7 & 8 Ladies Handgun Ladies Handgun LADIES ONLY two day defensive handgun class with Randy Cain. This class is taught from a ladies point of view and certain problems that apply to them. Many times these ladies shoot better than their other half by the end of the class. Always very
popular with the girls and many time given as a present by those who
love them (hint). Two days $400.00

Nov 13 - 15 Practical Rifle Think you know how to hunt and shoot? This class will open your eyes. Best taken with a high powered hunting bolt rifle (.308 and up preferred by our students). Your trigger control and hunting skills will improve greatly. The added premise for this class is your bolt or lever hunting rifle is the last weapon that the powers will take away and that may be just around the corner as many liberals don't see a need for us to have black semi-autos. Three days under the tutelage of Mr. Randy Cain for only $550.00.

Nov 20 - 22 Intermediate Handgun My favorite handgun class as it is a real shooters class, expect to shoot over 1200 rounds and still maintaining the accuracy the instructor demands. Think of this as a Tactical Handgun 101 on steroids minus the lengthy explanation of how to do each drill. It is fast paced and really fun, the repetition is sure to make you a much better shooter. Prerequisite of at least one Tactical Handgun 101. Three days for $550.00.

Nov 30 - Dec 2 Tactical Handgun 101 A WEEKDAY 101 for those who can't make the weekend classes. By far the
most asked for class we offer and for good reason, the handgun is the
most difficult weapon to shoot accurately. You will be taught why your
hits don't go where you want them to go and how to correct this problem.
All students will become a better shooter under the diagnostic ability
of Mr. Cain I urge all serious students to repeat this class at least twice a
year. Three days for $550.00

Dec 11 - 13 Tactical Shotgun 1 My favorite weapon for home defense and it might be yours after attending this class. The weapon is awesome within its limitations of distance out to 100 yards. You will learn how to manipulate this weapon and how to use its advantageous round capability from bird, buck and slug. A night shoot is planned for this class. Louis Awerbuck was the mentor of Randy Cain and there is no one left to teach the Awerbuck shotgun method except for Mr. Cain. Three days for $550.00

Dec 14 & 15 Tactical Revolver with Randy Cain. How many of us own revolvers and toss them in our pockets for short trips to the store but don't really know how to shoot them properly. The revolver has certain techniques that only relate to them but most of us don't have a clue. We have found that a large side benefit to taking this class is that your skills with a semi auto will improve greatly after learning the proper trigger press on a double action revolver. All in all it is a fun class and the last couple of hours are devoted to tearing the revolver down and improving the trigger while cleaning it properly. Two days for $425.00

More classes to be added shortly.

All classes will have ten dollar ($10.00) per day range fee payable the first day of class.

Thanks for your interest.

A challenge for all professors in this forum

First, let me say that I am NOT a shooting professor; I am a 76 year old Retired Engineer who has been shooting since I was 7 years old.
Lately I have been reading several forums and I am getting tired of seen professors and salesmen recommending students to buy semi-automatic pistols for self defense. Well, I strongly disagree with that recommendation. Semi-automatic pistols are very good, but for self defense I prefer a revolver. Some people talk about revolvers like they are obsolete… they are for old people!!!
Now for those professors that recommend ANY kind of semiautomatic pistol, here is the CHALLENGE:
Put a young strong guy, 21 feet from you, (most incidents of self defense occur this distance or less as you well know). That guy has knife and is going to try to kill you. You take your pistol out and try to shoot him…but you have a jam, or a squib load…he is running toward you! Now, what do you do?...He is going to cover the distance in 1.5 seconds and you already have used those to draw your pistol out. Oh! I know you are drawing the pistol and moving at the same time…but the guy is moving too! Can you clear the jam and shoot the guy?
If anyone of you believes he can, prove it to yourself and I definitely want to meet you. If not, start recommending a revolver for self defense. A revolver if it is well taken care for and you use good cartridges is not going to jam and even a squib load can be taken care of, by just pressing again the trigger, this is faster than a pistol.
Please and don't tell me that modern pistols don't jam, my answer would be... just to smile!!!

  • One student told his father, Jimmie Scott, who complained to the school and requested a parent-teacher conference

  • She is the wife of a school board member and brought her husband along to parent-teacher meeting

  • Scott says that Perry showed him what he described as propaganda and called the President a 'baby killer'

  • A superintendent has said Perry was already planning on retiring before the complaint about her behavior

Nancy Perry will no longer teach students at Dublin Middle School and will retire at the end of the year, city schools superintendent Chuck Ledbetter announced on Tuesday.

Perry is alleged to have told students that Obama is a Muslim and that any parent who support him couldn't be Christian, either...

The World’s most expensive individual landslide

Probably.

I drive by here almost every day. This happened in April, 32 years ago.

http://ift.tt/1lkGxYA

Quote:

The April 1983 Thistle debris slide, probably the world’s most expensive individual landslide, and the lake it formed by damming the Spanish Fork River severed three major transportation arteries: U.S. Highways 6/50 and 89, and the main transcontinental line of the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad (D&RGW). The D&RGW spent about $40 million ($69 million) to reestablish its line outside the devastated area, mostly to construct a twin-bore tunnel about 900 m long that bypassed the landslide and lake .

... These indirect losses from the Thistle landslide disaster may exceed the direct costs. Thus, total costs (direct and indirect) of this slide were probably on the order of $400 million ($688 million). Although there were no casualties as a result of the Thistle slide, it ranks as the most economically costly individual landslide in North America, and probably in the world.

Why the Police Officer Won’t Shake Your Hand
Quote:

There’s a lot going on in the law enforcement community with the current events in Baltimore. It’s terrible -for both sides. Loss of life is always a heartbreaking thing. But so is rioting and violence. This post is not about that. In light of these events, it’s nice to see so many people are in support of officers, but they are often very misunderstood. My husband is an officer, and he often has to do things that people don’t understand. For example, my husband was telling me a story the other night about letting a guy out of a tough situation. The guy reached to shake his hand. He had to decline. “Sorry man, I don’t shake hands.”

This may seem like a rude move, but apparently, it’s pretty common for police officers not to shake hands. They aren’t being rude, they’re staying safe. In light of the current events happening all over the country, I would like to share with you some things that are always on the minds of the law enforcement officers that we may never think about. When you think they are being rude or on a power trip, they are just being safe. Here are some reasons why a police officer may not shake your hand.

The main issue is a safety issue. Even when it’s you or me. He has to assume safety first in all situations.

His shaking hand is his gun hand. If you shake that hand, you are tying up that hand. If you’re a “bad” guy, you could suddenly over take him. He (sadly) has to think like that. All the time he has to imagine what you, yes even you, the soccer mom or the man in the suit on his way to work, might do to him in the worst case scenario...

Pics reported to FB, was I wrong to post?

So I posted two accident pics, same as you would see on the news to a Scannerfood thread about the accident on FB, just pics of the vehicles like I see there all the time but I got attacked and reported. I don't think I did a thing wrong but I just deleted them without saying a word to the people. One person said it was her Dads truck, who knows. It was on a busy interstate. New Glock 43 First Impressions and Testing

mercredi 29 avril 2015

I bought a new Glock 43 yesterday that was test fired 4-17-15 - not even 2 weeks old.

Upon unboxing, I immediately liked the looks and feel of the 43. The slide finish is the new fragile type but looks good for now. The pistol feels more solid when a full mag is inserted.

There is some resistance when inserting the mags in the magwell, but the mags seat with a positive click and feel. The mags eject easily and drop free. I am pleased the full magazines seat easily even on a closed slide. I owned a Shield for awhile, and it would not seat the 8 round magazine easily. I prefer the flat baseplate on the mags rather than the extended. I want a small concealable pistol without the flimsy extensions.that makes it less concealable.

I cleaned out any powder residue and excessive copper lube and relubed the normal points. I left the pistol slide locked open and the mags fully loaded overnight for a little break in.

The mags load easy and seat easy in the pistol's magwell. The trigger is pretty heavy now but I trust it will get lighter and smoother with some shooting

I was supposed to go shoot it today but work got in the way. Bummer.

I'll shoot it and report back my firing impressions and test results. I shot a brand new G43 a few weeks ago a Glock rep had just picked up and was breaking in. I really liked it so I have high hopes my new G43. If I like it I will probably get another one soon.

Bill to limit police deadly force advances in Missouri Senate

And so it begins ...

Current law justifies deadly force when an officer believes a suspect has committed or attempted a felony, is escaping with a deadly weapon or poses a serious threat of danger to others.

The bill would change part of that law to allow deadly force only if police reasonably believe the suspect has committed or tried to commit a violent felony.

Fury rises at Disney over use of foreign workers

http://ift.tt/1Ahf7oK

I don't understand why anyone would donate a dime to this enterprise, or for that matter a dime to any other Hollywood controlled entertainment enterprise such as cable TV, operations which generate hundreds of millions for anti-American political action.

Quote:

Disney CEO Bob Iger is one of eight co-chairs of the Partnership for a New American Economy, a leading group advocating for an increase in the H-1B visa cap. Last Friday, this partnership was a sponsor of an H-1B briefing at the U.S. Capitol for congressional staffers. The briefing was closed to the press.

One of the briefing documents handed out at the congressional forum made this claim: "H-1B workers complement - instead of displace - U.S. Workers." It explains that as employers use foreign workers to fill "more technical and low-level jobs, firms are able to expand" and allow U.S. workers "to assume managerial and leadership positions."
Quote:

From the perspective of five laid-off Disney IT workers, all of whom agreed to speak on the condition of anonymity, Disney cut well-paid and longtime staff members, some who had been previously singled out for excellence, as it shifted work to contractors. These contractors used foreign labor, mostly from India. The laid-off workers believe the primary motivation behind Disney's action was cost-cutting.

"Some of these folks were literally flown in the day before to take over the exact same job I was doing," said one of the IT workers who lost his job. He trained his replacement and is angry over the fact he had to train someone from India "on site, in our country."

Disney officials promised new job opportunities as a result of the restructuring, and employees marked for termination were encouraged to apply for those positions. But the workers interviewed said they knew of few co-workers who had landed one of the new jobs.

Employees said the original number of workers laid off back in October was more than several hundred. But the Disney source put that number lower, saying approximately 135 IT workers lost their jobs.

Disney has long used contractors at its IT operations in Lake Buena Vista, Fla., at a building called "Team Disney." Workers on visas were likely in use well before the restructuring. But in the period after the October layoff notifications, IT workers said they observed a marked increase in people they believe were new to the U.S.

It's difficult to determine how many H-1B workers, L-1 visa workers or contractor workers generally, were at this Disney site. Only a couple of workers asked the contractors where they lived or if they were on a visa. It was an awkward conversation and generally avoided. But one observation all of the workers recounted was the widespread use of Hindi.

Several of these workers, in interviews, said they didn't want to appear as xenophobic, but couldn't help but to observe, as one did, that "there were times when I didn't hear English spoken" in the hallways. As the layoff date neared, "I really felt like a foreigner in that building," the worker said.

9mm Glock 19 vs 357 Sig and 40. I'm weak.

I've had a Glock 19 for years, but have always chosen other Glocks over the 9mm model 19.
The 23 (40) launches bigger bullets.
The 32 (357 Sig) has more KE.
In compact Glock models 19/23/32, the 19 offers the advantages of lowest recoil (quickest follow up shots) and maximum capacity.

My recent acquisition of a dark earth Glock 19 made me reconsider carrying 9mm; I've carried the DE 19 instead of my potent 32, it (the 19) is so sweet shooting. :innocent:

Les Baer Concept II...what say ye?

Had the opportunity to shoot a Les Baer Concept II at our monthly work lunchtime range outing today and was very impressed...talk about easy to shoot tight groups!

The only thing I didn't like about the firearm was the front cocking serrations, I prefer a super clean 1911...but other than that it is a beautiful pistol.

When I got back to my desk, I had an offer for the pistol waiting in my inbox.

I haven't had a lot of time to research the pistol and I looked on BACs buyers guide, but it wasn't there.

Please let me know what you think of this firearm, specifically any experience with the Concept II.

Thanks!

One of the most interesting new pistols I've seen in a while...

I've been looking at this thing for the last couple of weeks. Its the FK Brno pistol out of the Czech Republic.

I'm not big on the proprietary cartridge, but its still cool. The design is obviously very heavily based on the CZ 75, but has some major differences too.

http://ift.tt/1FxFhJV

Its large and all steel, with a long barrel and tiny bore, so it must have some major heft to it. Its appears very well constructed and it also has no stupid rail to prevent me from buying it.

Unless I missed the projected MSRP, its not listed. However, that doesn't look like it comes cheap.

I know it won't appeal to many, but I like it. I can't wait to hear more details. ...looks pretty wild to me. :wavey:

I Love You Folks

You know, some things have happened recently that got me thinking of life and friends and love. I was raised in a family that didn't much share emotions and I've come to the realization over the years that this is not the kind of person I want to be.

I want you to know that I love you guys. You have all been a part of my life , some of you for more than a third of my life. You have been there with me through my troubles and my triumphs and we have shared our time together.

So many of you have given me wise council, have made me laugh and have helped drive me on, when things needed doing. You have all helped me turn this place into the juggernaut it has become and we have all in turn been able to help so many others, befriend so many others. What we have done here matters. We have helped people. We've helped each other and we have grown together. For my part, I want to thank you all, from my heart. Thank you.

Anyway, I have not gotten the Long Face from the doctor or anything. It has just occurred to me recently that people wait too long to say how they feel. So here I am, letting you all know what you mean to me. Carry on. Eric

Gen 4 recoil spring

It seem like I didn't know about stiffness issue with this new spring before getting Gen 4/19 and now I have to be selective on ammo I am shooting. My gen4/19 is refusing to shot 115gr ammo of some brands and shots 124gr perfectly.
Anyway, I don't like this "funny" behavior and I would probably replace spring on something better. Could you suggest good substitute for the stock gen 4 recoil spring? I heard different stories and suggestions but I would need the best one. Thanks!

He's the senate president and more than half the comments on his posts are about SB176 (concealed carry on campus). How could two people hold up the constitutional rights of an entire state? It is so infuriating.

How does tis scam work?

My boss received a phone call, caller ID was Texas. Caller asked if he was giving away checks, laughed and hung up.
Next day he got a call from Florida, someone who claimed to be a PI. And he was sending my boss 2 money orders that he thought my boss needed to look at for some reason. The day after that my boss received these 2 money orders in the mail. Both made out to some Jenny person for $950 each. They had a strip of paper taped to them with an email and phone # for him to call for instructions.

So how does this one work? Call me slow but, I don't see how they are getting money this way.

glock 23 gen 3 OEM threaded barell

What is the thread for a glock 23 barrel. Is it 13.5 x 1 mm lh or 14.5 x 1 mm lh? I thought I saw something that said it was the 13.5 and all the thread protectors I see are for 9mm only. Any help would be appreciated.

My new G43 and some holsters I have

I picked up my G43 from GTD last Thursday. They had gotten a shipment in and several guys were there to pick up their pistols. I don't think I had to wait 30 days for mine to come in.

I really like the way it feels in my large hand and I love that it doesn't have the finger bumps. I was concerned that I would find that the G43 was significantly larger than my Kahr CM9 which is my SS9 pocket gun. I took both out today and took some comparison photos and was pleasantly surprised to find that other than about a half inch longer barrel, both are almost exactly the same size. In fact, the Remora holster for pocket carry will work fine for the G43. The G43 also fit in a Crossbreed holster that fits the Kahr and a N82 and Desantis belt holster that fits my G19 size pistols.

So far very pleased to have pocket gun that is a Glock with the very familiar Glock trigger and feel as its six larger brothers.

How many GT'ers are musicians and what do you play?

Out of curiosity I was wondering how many of you play some of musical instrument and what kind of instrument you play. Doesn't matter to me how "good" you play, just that you enjoy playing.

Me, I play a guitar and harmonica, sometimes at the same time, but usually just one or the other. I'm a member of a bluegrass band, and really enjoy bluegrass music, but I enjoy playing old-time country and gospel music, too.

I have three Martin guitars (D-28, D-41 and D-45), though not as pretty as the 41 and 45, the D-28 is probably my favorite one to play - sounds deep and sweet..

I play two kinds of Hohner harps, Golden Melody and Special Twenty.

Have been playing for about 20 years. Played harps before picking up a guitar.

In the evening I like to turn the TV off and grab a guitar. My wife bought herself a guitar, a Taylor GS Mini, three years ago and joins me. We play and sing - just the two of us - quiet relaxing.

Inline Fabrication Products

I just wanted to give a little positive feedback to Dan over at Inline Fabrications. This isn't my first experience with their stuff but I got a meager tax refund and decided get myself a little present and finally get a few bits and pieces to pimp the Dillon Super 1050 out.
I recently decided to just completely process all my .223 brass on the 1050 and load it all on the XL650, the rest of the time setting the 1050 up for 9mm eliminating issues running into WCC military crimped 9 brass.
One thing I wanted to do was increase the foot print of the press to add stability on the bench and raise the platform in turn raising the handle height on the down stroke. After correspondence with Dan. I ordered a INLINE FAB 1050 4 inch MICRO mount and it was just what was needed to resolve both issues. The product quality, both fit and finish is outstanding. The studs are already threaded to the base plate and Dan includes all the necessary hardware to attach the press. I just unmounted my press and reused the bolts to secure the mount down. Placed the press on top and bolted it down. Everything took me about 35 minutes.
As you can see I have a meager bench, a Harbor Freight prefabricated wood workers bench that has served me well.... It's pretty solid being anchored to the studs on the wall but when I started doing the complete brass processing noticed an ever so slight flexing on the edge. The mount has eliminated that by moving it slightly back and the wider base. In addition to the mount I picked up a couple of the bin barriers they sell and a primer tube rack which is convenient.
If you haven't looked into their website, take a look... Dan has some well thought out products.

Just picked this up.

Oh yea, Nuclear agreement?! Bring it on!

The ship had no U.S. citizens aboard, the spokesman said, contradicting earlier reports which said there were 34 U.S. sailors on board. The company managing the vessel told a Danish news channel there were 24 crew members, mostly from Eastern Europe and Asia..

Do all Christians go to the same heaven?

Hi all. I tend to lurk here as, 1-I’m Jewish and not particularly angry with anyone, and, 2-Most of the time I can’t figure out what all the fussing is about (quoting from ancient texts in an old style and in an out of date form of the English language does not help my comprehension of the various debates taking place one bit!).

I’ve noted a good deal of contentious debate between folks who, at least from my understanding of what was being written, all believe that Jesus was the Messiah. Thus my question; Do all who believe in Jesus as the Messiah go to heaven, regardless of the “church” or affiliation they have in this world? If that is so, then why all the rancor? Wouldn’t it be less difficult for all involved (for those who hold, fundamentally, the same beliefs) to simply acknowledge the various differences between the religious orders (groups, sects, organizations, etc.) and just move on with their lives?

Does it really matter if one is a 7th Day Adventist, a Baptist, a Catholic, a Mormon or a Presbyterian if everyone holding those belief structures will be up in heaven with Jesus upon their deaths here on earth?

Peace and love to all.

Kevin of KKM Precision - R.I.P.

I just saw this on AR15.com. The folks in Nevada say this is Kevin of KKM Precision. I feel sick. He was a really nice guy and was always glad to talk to help you out with a question.

Kevin took on my request to develop my 6" Glock 45-10MM conversion barrel back in late 2004 when no one else would consider it. A year or so later when the family was out visiting my wife's mom and step-dad in South Lake Tahoe (over the hill from Carson City, NV.), he invited my son and I over to see his shop. His son was there and while his shop was small and nondescript in a row of small shops, he had a number of barrel making machines working and had a decent stock of barrels to ship out.

A real gentleman and always helpful.

7th Circuit Court Rules Assault Weapons Ban OK Based on Feelings

BREAKING: 7th Circuit Court Rules Assault Weapons Ban OK Based on Feelings
By Nick Leghorn on April 27, 2015

In a 2-1 split ruling today, the Federal appeals court for Illinois ruled that the “Assault Weapons Ban” in Highland Park — enacted days before new legislation went into effect banning exactly that kind of law — was constitutional. The majority opinion written by Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals Judge Frank Easterbrook relies heavily on the idea of “home rule” for the majority of its rationale, but buried in the text is the true reason why this court believes that infringing on the right to keep and bear commonly used firearms is legal: it makes people feel safe.

How do you get rid of old paint, cleaning solutions, etc?

I've got tons of paint, automobile cleaning stuff, garden poisons, etc that haven't been touched in decades and I think it is time for it to go.
Normally, I'll just toss the randam can of two in the regular trash, but I don't think the garbage man will take a whole sack full.
What do I do with it?

Not Quite as Shameful...

A few weeks back I reported that my wife had embarrased me by guying a Gl...Glo....(I can't say it)...GLOCK...there I did it. Well, I gotta admit the thing works, and she's happy, so I guess it can stay. But she's gotta take care of it. I'm not going to feed it or clean up after it.

Well, you know how that worked. First time at the range, I said, "I'm not going to pick-up that brass. It can just lay there for all I care."

Man, I hate to leave brass around. No, I'm NOT going to pick it up. That's why I shoot revolvers.

Then the RO comes by with a dust pan and a broom and sweeps up the brass. "You want to save this?" They sweep up the brass for you?

So now I got a delima. If I start reloading for just one 9mm it hardly seems worth the effort, plus my wife will walk around with a smug look on her face. "Told you so."

So the answer is obviously...Get another 9mm.

So I got this one. It was cheap. It was not a Glock.

Smith & Wesson Model 910. Basically an economy version of the Model 59 I suppose is as good a description as any. Made in the "high capacity magazine ban" days, it only has a ten round magazine, which is fine with me since it's a range toy and an excuse for ME to reload 9mm ammo. I suppose one of these days, I might pick up a regular 15 round mag, but I can't think of a pressing reason to for now.

I have shot it enough to know it works. Pretty well actually for not being a revolver and all that you know.

I don't think they'll catch on though.

Target sights for most accuracy?

17L.
Have BarSto fitted, 3.5 lbs connector with the "25 cent" trigger job. Also TruGlo sites - they seem to be very nice overall combat sight but they also seem to be the bottleneck in obtaining maximum accuracy.

I cannot do better than about 4-5" groups at 25 meters, I suspect either due to not getting a razor sharp sight picture or not being perfect with trigger control. Tried premium ammo also. WWB is not consistent but premium brands gave me better results.

I like the stock target sights on a Browning Hi-Power. Not useful as an all-purpose combat sight but they do get a crisp picture.

I also noticed that if I use a small target, say a 3" circle at 25m, it's easier to be more accurate versus a target that's 6" in size or larger. I tested at 20m and got about 2-3" groups.

I suspect the root of the problem is that the TruGlo front sight is too wide for precision work. I wonder if it's just like with AR15, where for real precision, you want a narrow front sight post versus the stock thick one.

Anyone a member of USCCA?

I just took the plunge and joined the USCCA (United States Concealed Carry Association)

I've always worried about what might happen if I used a gun in self defense and entered the legal system because of it. This feels good to know there is some legal help if that happens.

What comments do you have about this outfit?

Benchmade Lifesharp Service

I would be very surprised if any of you remember this, but I was at the SHOT Show in 2000 or 2001, the year that Benchamade launched their Axis-Lock folding knife lock system. I was so impressed wit the design, I bought two consecutively-number reproduction copies of their Ares Elishewitz 730S Axis-Lock folder.

I gave one to my then BIL and kept the other one. I have been carrying it pretty much continuously ever since and it showed. The knife had plenty of scuffs scrapes, bumps bruises and was all in all, getting to be pretty disreputable looking.

One of the grip panel panel screws fell out, so I contacted Benchmade to get another one. They suggested that I sent it in and let them give it a mini-makeover. Except for th cost of blades and grip panels, I think pretty much every thing else discovered, but you had better check with them for clarification.

So, for the cost of shipping the knife to them, they took it apart, did a light refinish on the grip panels & blade, resharpened it as no one but them can and reassembled it. They adjusted the action so that it opens now as it id did when I bought it.

The left the old belt clip on, in case I didn't want to screw up a new one, but they did include a new one, with screws.

This process took less that two weeks, from the day I dropped the knife in the mail. I have always loved my Benchmades and to say that I am satisfied with their customer support would be a massive understatement. These guys are great folks and they were a joy to deal with.

Hello as mentioned I am from Indiana, my name is Scott. My fine state allows us to carry sidearms, concealed or open carry. I purchased a NEW Glock 42 .380 for my wife to carry for protection and am having MAJOR problems with this firearm. That is why I am here looking for answers and/or help.

Interesting arrest - Felony Desertion

I had an interesting arrest yesterday during a traffic stop. I cited the driver on a criminal citation for not having a DL and made contact with her boyfriend who showed up on scene to drive the truck home.

The boyfriend came back with a felony warrant for desertion so I arrested him and transported him to the jail. I was by myself and he was 6'4" and 245lbs. Fortunately I cuffed him before he had a change to even realize what was happening.

On the way to jail he was very cordial, made small talk and mentioned that he was arrested once before for being AWOL and for "making threats." He said after three deployments and watching his family life fall apart he wanted out. He said he's on medicine now for PTSD so he can function in society. He then asked me if I didn't show up for work if I would be arrested since he was essentially being arrested for doing the same thing. I have to admit he had a point but I didn't sign the agreement, he did.

Here's where it gets interesting...

Once at the jail I got his booking paperwork. They want him held and he will be extradited. I found in the paperwork both typed and hand written in large letters "high risk" and "escape risk."

Come to find out, dispatch knew about this when confirming the warrant and called my Chief to see if someone was near me to back me up. (the Chief lives in town and the closest back up was almost 30 minutes away) They never bothered to let me know of these modifiers. :steamed: I only found out about that part when the Chief called me this morning to ask how the arrest went.

This is the first time in 17 years of work that I have come across a desertion charge. Something tells me we will start to see more in this line of work.

What is the value of Black Talon ammo?

I have a bunch of Black Talon ammo in different calibers that I bought when Remington announced they no longer would sell ammo under that moniker. Is there any interest in collecting this stuff? Or did I just waste my money? I think I paid about $35 a box. Yeah, I know, quite a premium.

Putting pressure on Right side of frame...pistol wont fire...

Not sure if anyone else has experienced this....Fitted a Ghost Evo Elite Connector for my Gen4 Glock 19....For some reason if I apply too much pressure on the right side of the frame (where the trigger bar is located) it retards the firing of the pistol, and the return of the trigger....But if I shoot without my support hand (Im left handed, so my right hand) The pistol does not hesitate to fire, nor does the trigger have a hard time returning...

What gives? With stock parts I do not have this problem...Just trying to figure out why this is happening.

Anyone ever experience this?

Visiting the PDRC

OK, so I have to make a trip to the Peoples' Democratic Republic of California :crying:to visit my son. I have scoured the web for info on taking a 15 round magazine for my 19 into the evil state.

It appears to me that I would be "importing" a "large capacity magazine" into said Marxist empire. So, being a good American citizen and fearful of the zealots in PDRC, I bought two 10 rounders to take on the drive.

Naturally, I must stop before crossing into the socialist utopia, unload the 19, lock it in a hard case and place said case in the rear of my Yukon so I cannot access the gun while driving. The magazines will stay up front in the console.

Any obvious flaws in my plan?

Shooting test for CCW, wouldn't you practice first?

The correct read of the Constitution, is we don't need no stinkin' permits. But assuming you live in a state where the police believe you need a permit, and a judge will only let you carry if you pass a live fire test...

Wouldn't you show up with a gun that you had practiced with?

This is second hand from an instructor I know, but the story goes, shooter X steps up to the line, fires 1 shot, and the gun jams, jams good, and Shooter X will now have to re-schedule into another course at some later date. Shooter X said it was the first time ever firing that gun

Panama City, FL: Pondering living there

As the title states: I'm thinking of relocating my family to Panama City FL. I'm also open to other cities/towns in the general area. I'm fortunate in that I can work from anywhere in the country as long as I have a good internet connection.

What can you tell me about the area?
How's the housing market, employment opportunities, crime, etc?
I'm also very curious about the shooting sports/gun culture. Are there any good shooting clubs or ranges? What about good gun shops in the general area? How's the hunting (fishing is top notch, I know that already)? I passed through recently and it seems like a generally gun-friendly area.

In case you're wondering: we're moving back to be near family. Our daughters are not school aged yet and now's the time if it's going to happen. We want them to know their uncles, cousins, etc. We also want the grandparents to be able to spend time with them, life is short and they're getting old.
I grew up in South Florida, my wife in Tampa, but we have no interest in anything south of Ocala.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Signt help

In process of shopping for sights for both G22 and G34. I think I am writing off most popular night sight sets because the front sight is usually the same width or thicker than stock front. I was hoping to find something .115 to .125 for front. Please share thoughts on the following:

1. How do fiber optic sights perform indoors at the range? That is where I will be shooting the most.

2. How bright will painted or paint/tritium sights be indoors at the range?

3. The advantages of taller sight sets vs. stock height (.165) sets?

Again, will mostly be shooting indoors, with exception to maybe 2 GSSF per year outside. Where I am NJ no local outdoor ranges by me. Thanks!!

Another boringly regular G43 range report...

GUN and mods:
With Ghost connector, a reduced plunger spring, everything polished, and some other stuff, I got my trigger from 8.25# down to 5.5# (on a crappy WHEELER scale). I installed Trijicon HDs, and a Hogue Jr grip (though I'm going to go with grip-tape on this gun I think--instead of my usual stippling).

AMMO and reliability:
100% reliable with over 300rds: I shot 124 HST (50rds), 147 HST (26rds), 147 Hydrashoks(26rds), 115 American Eagle (200rds), and 115 Blazer Brass (40rds). There was also an assortment of loose ammo in my bag I shot up; I think most of it was 115gr freedom munitions, but some was WWB, as well as some Ranger.

REPORT:
Recoil was fine--not really any more noticeable than my G19, but then the Hogue Jr may have absorbed some of it. Noise didn't seem noteworthy. Sights were as easy to track as with the 19, so I don't think it's flipping any more.

Accuracy was great...hits were a TINY bit left, so I gave the sights a little push with a sight-pusher (that had to be rigged with parts in the truck for these small sights--glad no one saw it). At 25Y, I had to aim about 4" low in order to hit the bullseye with the 43 and the 19 (the latter has WC vickers battlesights on it). I thought the wide front sight of the 43's orange Trijicon HDs would make 25Y groups fairly large, but my biggest 5rd group was probably 4-5" resting or standing (plenty of 2.5-3.5" groups)--it shot as well as my G19 with a Wilson Combat barrel and thinner front F/O sight.

As soon as I put myself on the timer at 5-10Y all shots went left (like they have been doing--I'm jerking the trigger; gonna slow down and fix that). Shooting steel plates at 15Y was easy as soon as I remembered to aim lower, not for the center. I didn't seem to notice whether or not I was using the extended mag even though I thought I'd much prefer it. Short mag base felt fine.

LIMP-WRISTING:
I tried to get it to fail by limpwristing, holding it sideways, etc. It wouldn't fail (but then it's coated in FireClean and all polished up).
--

NOTE: The ONLY thing I noticed was when loading the mags, I could feel the springs click a bit every once in awhile--not binding, but doing something, adjusting...but it is definitely more pronounced than in G19 mags. That said, they were easy to load, and easy to shoot. A few times I thought they had gotten caught up, but then I realized I'd loaded 6 rounds. ;o)
