Visited a new liquor store yesterday

vendredi 6 mars 2015

I skipped work due to the snow. What to do with the kids in school and nothing to do? Let's go to breakfast.

Of course, the place we wanted to go closed down recently. But there was this liquor store nearby that I had never been in but saw a lot of advertising for.

Why not. It's 8:45 in the AM. What better place than a liquor store.

Wow.

Just wow.

My regular liquor "superstore" is a bit high-end. LOTS of wine. LOTS of it. And a very large booze selection as well. Beer? Wellllllll, notsomuch outside of a huge 2-3 aisle mix-and-match area. But if you were looking to stock a big college party, it isn't the place for it.

This new place - well, it is drinker's central. Not that that is a bad thing. It was a nice place. About 1/8th the wine of my usual establishment.

BUT. . . .

You knew it was a boozer's place when you saw the WALL of nip bottles behind the cashier.

I didn't care. I was out to see what they had in the Bourbon dept.

I guess I knew you could get 1.75's of Makers.

I DIDN'T know you could get 1.75's of Bulleit bourbon AND rye. And Woodford makes a 1.75 (or something larger than standard 750). And Dickel. Craig. Knob. And a bunch of others. I thought that was just reserved for ubiquitous brands like JD.

Boy was I happy. I grabbed a 1.75 or Makers at the awful price of $53. Did I care? Nope. A fifth of Makers' runs about $32 now. On a GOOD sale, you might get $26.I just paid the equivalent of $23. WOOT!!!!!

Their bourbon selection wasn't actually that bad. Plenty of "get drunk quick" brands. But plenty of decent brands as well. They even had Whistle Pig, which I've never seen around here.

Nor was their scotch selection that thin. (Not really a fan, but I can dance my way down the scotch aisle and know if they have what it takes.)

Another strange one: The "high end" store - all of the over-$40 bottles of bourbon are in a locked case.

I saw ALL the bottles in the "low-end" place wide open. $50. $70. $90. Didn't matter. Grab it and head to the register.

What a treat. The staff was awesome as well. My wife grabbed the wrong kind of case of Yuengling. "Oh honey - that's gonna cost you too much. You want the other case. Hang on." She got on the little radio, ordered up another and it was brought to us.

I guess I'll be a customer. I'll get my wine at the high end place but a lot of my bourbon money will be going to this establishment.

And, no. At 8:45 in the AM, we were not the only ones in the store. I found that funny. "Hon. We are going to do something we've never done before - buy some booze before we even had breakfast." Funny morning.

And the weather cleared enough for a longish drive to a favorite spot across the county for breakfast. So I had that going for me, too. LOL
