Dallas officers moving in droves to Fort Worth PD

"If you could do the same job, but for more money and better benefits, you'd do it, right? That's exactly what's happening with officers in North Texas' two biggest police departments."

FORT WORTH – Officer Karla Garbelotto is starting to get a pretty good feel for "Funkytown."

"I have no complaints, except geography," she said with a laugh.

It was only a few weeks ago she graduated from the Fort Worth Police Department's first-ever lateral class.

It's a brand-new program that allows officers from other departments to transfer to Fort Worth.

"It's a six week – basically, an in-service training program," said FWPD Lt. Devin Pitt. "We don't have to come in and train them how to do police work. We just have to train them on policies and procedures of Fort Worth."

Pitt said of the 63 officers who applied, 10 made the cut. Eight of those 10 - the vast majority - came from the Dallas Police Department.

The lieutenant said it could be because the cities are so close to one another. Officer Garbelotto said she doesn't think that's the reason.

She says benefits, salary, and morale are all better with the Fort Worth PD. And she's not alone.

Any red-flags here?
