One of my guys AGAIN
NORFOLK
A Norfolk police officer was involved in a shooting Monday night, resulting in non-life-threatening injuries.
Shortly before 9:30 p.m., police received a report of a man with a weapon in the 2500 block of Leo St., said Officer Sam Shenouda, a police spokesman. A short time later, officers found and confronted a man with a handgun, at which point shots were fired, Shenouda said.
The man was taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, Shenouda said, and the gun was recovered at the scene.
The incident is under investigation, he said. No further information was available.
Former mayoral candidate Michael Muhammad, whose office is nearby, said he went to the scene while police were investigating. Muhammad said witnesses and police told him that as officers gave chase the gun fell out of the young man's pants. Police told him to not to go for the gun, but the man did.
Muhammad said he was told that the officer then shot the man.
Chief Michael Goldsmith came to the scene, Muhammad said.
"I was impressed by the chief's presence at the scene and him being a part of the investigation himself," Muhammad said. "I encourage the young men in the city of Norfolk to stop brandishing and carrying illegal guns."
