Death f the great deli / diners

samedi 21 février 2015

I'm Jonesing for a great deli sandwich and deli diner food. Where I live in So Ca chain crap this chain crap that. I grew up in a Italian area of California and the smell when you walked into these tiny delis if bottled could be sold now. Real provolone and salami hanging not a plastic prop... In these delis the guys behind the counter would give any kid that came in a slice of salami just to be nice. So, going shopping with mom was always worth it there. They are all gone now...

In So Ca, We have a few Italian delis (Claros) but their selection has gone down. Good luck finding a good Jewish deli (langers in LA is good but a drive for me). Heading to Claros today and will drop some serius dough on real mortadella with pistachio, calabrese salami, marinated mushroom and who knows what else.

When I went to NYC went straight to Juniors for some chopped liver and a pastrami sandwich friggin great. Wife and son ran for the cheesecake. Rich and poor alike love this place.

The Little Italy sections in NYC, SF etc are ghosts. Come on America, we need better than Subway and Togos. Chopped pressed formed meat is sh it.

And I love a real deli that makes homemade soup. On a cold day can anything be better than a nice bowl of soup and a second course?

I will say there is a great Italian deli still and believe it or not it's in SLC- Tony Caputos-- hundreds of cheese and salami sections but I didn't ever see them hand a kid a slice of salami just because.
