Strange Reaction Using Cold Blue Solution...Can You Explain??

vendredi 17 avril 2015

Hey all,

While at one of my local gun shops the other day I picked up some liquid Cold Blue, the Formula 44/40 brand to be exact. It's the one that looks identical to WINDEX.

Anyway, I got it because I have some of the old BEAR Archery broadheads that had been given to me but they were all pitted and rusted so I took the DREMEL out and sanded all that off until it was nothing but shiny metal. I had a fellow archer tell me to Cold Blue them cause he had done the same thing and it worked great. I was looking for a way to get them back as close to the original finish as possible.

So, I get one of them out and sand it a bit to make sure there wasn't anything on the surface or tiny rust spots that I might've missed. Then I took a Q-Tip and started applying the liquid. The bluing took to it immediately and when I had it covered to the point that I liked, I stopped. I might've put 2 coatings on it, all while still wet. I dabbed up the excess bluing liquid and sat it aside.

I guess I forgot about it because it was probably a week before I went back to check it. It wasn't in any harsh environment, it was in my room, on my book case. When I picked it up I was very surprised. The blades turned out great, nice and blue and all even. The ferrule was horrible. It has a thin layer of RUST that had formed all over it. It was like DUST and I wiped it off, but there was a rust color that remained behind under it all over that section.

Thinking I had did something wrong, I redone it. Totally sanded down all of it, even the blades that looked great. I applied it the same way I did before, according to the directions. I wiped off all excess doubly well to make sure it was totally dry before I left it to "cure" if you will. I even took some gun oil and lightly wiped it all down.

This time the blades were the same and as for the ferrule part, there was no layer of rust "dust" like before, but there is a rust color left on that section. It is NOT a nice, dark blue like the blade section. It was all dry when I checked it, but even the light coat of oil didn't prevent it from leaving a light rust coloration. I took my T-shirt and wiped that area off really well and my T-Shirt had rust on it. You can clearly see it on my shirt.

I just don't get it. What is going on here? Right now it looks like I would be better to just oil them with a thicker oil, put them in my quiver and just go hunt with them and not even worry about bluing them cause the ferrule part is going to have rust on it even before I get to the woods.

Can you all explain what is going on here and what I should do to stop this from happening? If I can get it stopped, I'd go ahead and do the other 12 I have that have been sanded and ready to go.

Thanks for the time.
