Bar Mitzvah gift question

jeudi 16 avril 2015

I come to the great glocktalk with a question.

My daughter (who's 13) is going to her first bar mitzvah on Saturday for a classmate. He's appears to be a good kid, and my daughter hangs out with him in her group of friends at school. My wife and I have only met him and his family once, we are not attending, and were not invited to the event.

Other recent (non Jewish-Mitzvah's)birthday's my daughter has given $30-40 gift cards and stuff as gifts, and understand multiples of 18 for Mitzvah is appropriate. That said, my wife says $54 is a good gift.

here's the question. The event where the party is happening is a customer of mine. In speaking with the chef, I know approximately what the party is costing the family (I think close to $40k). I think we should cover at least my daughter's "cost" in the part . My wife think's I'm out of my mind to think that we should send $180(ish) from my 13 year old daughter to her 13 year old friend.

So am I crazy? I wouldn't go to a wedding of a friend and not "pay my way". Is $54 too low? should we "split" the difference?

what do you do/have you done with your kids friends for the Mitzvah gifts?
