On the day of my mother's 14th birthday, her party was interrupted when the radios in her parent's third story walk-up along Fourth Ave. in Sunset Park, Brooklyn blared out the attack on Pearl Harbor. In the next four years, she saw two neighborhood guys she had crushes on and one eventual boyfriend enlist and never return (Pacific subs.). One from Yonkers who finished WWII then went overseas to Korea caught her eye. She then worked herself through a B.A. at Brooklyn College and then an M.A. and Ed. D at NYU where she kicked the asses of some of NYC's most inept slackers forced by law to occupy public school. She passed this morning from the abject cruelty of Alzheimer's. A great, great mother, mom, and mama. HH
